Do You or Your Child Have Dental Sealants?

Posted .

Maybe your child just got their first permanent back molars. Or perhaps your teeth are particularly prone to decay. Dental sealants would be a very smart investment. Here are some FAQs about dental sealants:

What are dental sealants?

Dental sealants are like a snowsuit for your teeth. They are thin, protective coatings that adhere to the chewing surfaces of your molars, keeping bits of food out and stopping acid and bacteria from settling on your teeth, like a snowsuit keeps you clean and dry during a snowstorm.

How effective are they?

Dental sealants reduce the risk of molar decay by nearly 80%. This is especially true for children. In 2016, the Centers for Disease Control released a report stating that “school-age children without sealants have almost three times more cavities than children with sealants.”

What process will Dr. Christopher and Lisa Hulen use to apply the sealants?

Here at Hulen Family Dentistry in Tipton, Indiana, we make the process quick and painless. First, we will clean and dry your or your child’s teeth. Then Drs. Christopher or Lisa Hulen will apply an acidic gel, which roughens your teeth so that the sealant will adhere more effectively. Shortly thereafter, we will apply the sealant on the chewing surfaces of your molars. Then we will use a special blue light to harden the sealant.
